with gentle heat and pressure
Tixel i® (pronounced Tixel Eye) is an FDA-cleared device for the application of localized heat and pressure therapy in adult patients with evaporative dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Powered by proprietary Thermo-Mechanical Action (TMA®), treatments consist of short pulses of controlled heat applied with gentle pressure through a matrix of self-disinfecting, titanium pyramids.
What sets Tixel i apart from other dry eye treatments is that it only takes 2 minutes for both eyes to be treated. It can be administered by ophthalmologists, optometrists and other allied healthcare professionals.
By contrast, other treatments can take up to 1 hour and often include radiation. The effectiveness of Tixel i has been scientifically documented in multiple clinical publications, including a multi-center study in the USA that included a 6-month follow-up extension.
The prevalence of dry eye is on the rise. It is estimated that 30 million people in the USA suffer from the symptoms which can include:
Not all dry eye is the same. These symptoms can be the result of excessive digital screen time for work or entertainment, often because we forget to blink. Certain eye surgeries (such as LASIK or cataract surgery), can exacerbate dry eye. However, many people have problems with their glands that cause Evaporative Dry Eye.
Tears are necessary to help lubricate, protect and nourish our eyes. Without a steady flow of tears, eye irritation will result. In Evaporative Dry Eye, the meibomian glands can start to deteriorate or become blocked which leads to a shortage of protective oil on the surface of your eyes and quicker-than-normal evaporation of the tear layer.
Tixel i treatments focus on rejuvenating the eyelid glands so your tear layer is well-balanced and does not evaporate .
Tixel i Treatment
All you need to do is relax! The clinician will gently cleanse your eyelid areas and an analgesic gel may be applied prior to treatments. The disinfected handset is placed gently on your upper and lower eyelids so short pulses of heat can be applied through a matrix of superficial thermal dots to improve gland function. You’ll feel warmth and gentle pressure on your eyelids for a total of 2 minutes for both eyes. Immediately after treatment, you may experience temporary eye watering or blurry vision.
For maximum relief, most patients complete 3 Tixel i treatments spaced 2 weeks apart.
